Swindon Isis Angling Club
BRISTOL AVON – SUTTON BENGER (Closed from 15th March – 15th June)

The Bristol Avon River at Sutton Benger is the perfect natural fishing venue. With approximately 1.25km of bank the river boasts some of the finest mixed river coarse fishing in the south of England, for pleasure, specimen and match anglers.

The river has the standard closed season but, throughout the remainder of the year the nature of the river changes considerably, however good mixed catches are always common. In the Spring and Summer, the lily fringed river is at it’s slowest and is the ideal bream and tench fishery. As Autumn develops Barbel are caught more regularly, with double figure fish being common. Anglers can be rewarded through even the coldest winter with good roach catches or pike to 30lbs – there really is something for everyone!

Permanent peg numbers are located along the length of the river. The river is also divided into naturally different areas, known as;

Below the Top Weir to the Railway Bridge
Above the Top weir. (CLICK TO SEE THE PEGS)

Competitions are held regularly on the river. Typically competitions are arranged to use a maximum of three of these areas so no one is turned away from the water when wishing to fish. The exceptions to this are when the water is leased for a local winter league and the Isis Angling Club “Last Chance” open fishing competition held on the last day of each river season. – Most permanent swims are included in this competition which has become increasingly popular over recent years with match and pleasure anglers and is the ideal finish to the fishing season.

No. 1 (Open all year)

No. 1 Lake is a mature former gravel pit of approximately 6-7 acres in size. The lake has matured naturally over time to produce a picturesque lake, abundant with wildlife. Generally suited to specimen anglers, the lake provides a tranquil setting for a summers evening stalking session or a long bivvy session. Within the lake specimen Crucian Carp and Bream (to over 10lb) can be found amongst the huge head of Tench, and Carp to 30lb.

No. 1A (Open all year)

Circa 1985, the main No. 1 Lake was divided to create an additional lake of approximately 1 acre in size. Following a long period of little use, this lake now provides fantastic silver fish and small carp fishing for pleasure and match anglers. The lake is suitable for Disabled anglers and is a great lake for people just starting their interest in angling.
